Early-Season Chinese Garlic Sells For Less Than 2 Yuan [0.29 USD] Per 0.5 Kg
The harvest of garlic is slowly beginning even though June has not yet arrived. Early-season garlic is already available in the market. Early-season garlic from Henan sells for 1.6-1.9 yuan [0.23-0.28 USD] per 0.5 kg, while early-season garlic from Jinxiang, Shandong, and Pizhou, Jiangsu, sells for less than 1.5 yuan [0.22 USD] per 0.5 kg. Even though the price is much higher than the 0.7-0.8 yuan [0.10-0.12 USD] per 0.5 kg of last year, many traders were expecting prices over 2 yuan [0.29 USD] per 0.5 kg. Some garlic traders thing the market will greatly improve in 2019.
Even below 2 yuan the price is still much higher than last year and garlic farmers have good prospects of making profit this year. The overall surface area devoted to garlic plantation in 2019 is much smaller than in 2018. The harvest season has only just begun, and the peak period is still 20 days away. The price is likely to increase as the garlic market becomes more active.
